Google Business Profile: 7 Things Gurugram Businesses Aren't Doing

Quick answer: To get more customers from your Google Business Profile, choose the right primary category, write a full description, list your real service areas, keep your name, address and phone identical everywhere, post weekly, reply to every review and fill in every section. Most Gurugram businesses skip at least three of these.

When someone searches "cafe near me" or "CA in Udyog Vihar," the map results with reviews and a directions button appear first. That's your Google Business Profile. It's free, and for many local businesses it brings in more calls and visits than the website does.

Most owners set it up once and never go back to it. These are the seven gaps we see most often.

1. Are you using the right main category?

Your primary category is one of the biggest factors in whether you show up. Choose it the way customers search, not the way you'd describe yourself. A bakery should be "Bakery" rather than "Pastry shop" if that's what people type. You can add up to nine secondary categories for everything else you do.

2. Is your description too thin?

You get about 750 characters to explain what you do, for whom and where. Most businesses write one line. Use the space for your main services, the areas you serve and what sets you apart, and write it for people rather than as a list of keywords.

3. Are your service areas vague?

If you go to customers, list the areas you really cover: specific sectors, localities or pin codes. "All of India" helps nobody.

4. Do your name, address and phone match everywhere?

If your address is written one way on Google, another way on your website and a third way on Justdial, Google trusts the listing less. Make them identical everywhere.

5. Did you post once and go silent?

You can post updates, offers and news on your profile. Regular posts make the profile look active and give Google more to work with. Once a week is plenty. One useful habit is turning each blog article into a short Google post, with the answer written into the post itself rather than only a link.

6. Are you ignoring reviews?

Reviews affect both where you rank and whether people choose you. Ask happy customers to leave one and send them a direct link to make it easy. Then reply to every review, good and bad. Customers and Google both read your replies, so mention what you did ("glad you enjoyed the paneer tikka chaat").

Never pay for reviews or offer a discount in exchange for one. It breaks Google's rules and can get reviews removed.

7. Have you left sections empty?

Products, services, attributes such as wheelchair access, parking and delivery, opening hours and photos all matter. Each empty field is a question Google can't answer for a customer. Google now uses AI to answer people's questions about businesses, drawing on your profile and reviews, so an empty profile leaves it with little to say about you.

How long does this take?

Setting everything up properly takes about an hour, and keeping it current takes about ten minutes a week. That alone puts you ahead of most businesses near you.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Google Business Profile free?

Yes. Creating and managing a Google Business Profile costs nothing.

How often should I post on my Google Business Profile?

Once a week suits most local businesses. Keeping it regular matters more than posting a lot.

Can I buy reviews or offer a discount for them?

No. Paid or incentivised reviews break Google's policies and can lead to reviews being removed or the profile being restricted.
